August WIPocalypse Process or Product

WIPocalypse
WIPocalypse is hosted by Measi's Musings

Each month we have to share the projects we want to complete before the End Of The World.  For me, this will be my "18 in '18".  Many of them are part of SALs so I will be working on them each month.

This month I worked on 5 of my 18 projects:

1. Lavender & Lace - Enchanted Alphabet Spooky Conversion:

stitched on 32 count Tiger Lily Murano by Sparklies

That is the Z, the final letter of the alphabet and now I am ready to add all the spooky extras over the next few month.  The aim is to finish this one by Hallowe'en 2019 as it will be my monthly Hallowe'en project when I finish the Jardin Prive design.

People who are familiar with the design will notice that I removed the Frilliest Child in the World.  This was partly because she wasn't spooky but mostly so the project would fit on this piece of fabric from my stash!

2. Donna Kooler - Zodiac Signs:

stitched on 32 count Millenium Blue linen

3. Jardin Prive - Happy Hallowe'en Night:

stitched on 32 count Cognac linen

4. Just Nan - 12 Days of Christmas

stitched on 32 count Vintage Grain linen

5. Mrs Peggotty - Alice & The Flamingo

stitched over 1 on 25 count Blue Evenweave

Measi always sets us a discussion topic each month:

August – Which is more satisfying to you and why – the process of stitching a piece, or the finish?

Now, obviously the process of stitching is incredibly satisfying or I wouldn't do it!  And if the finish was the most satifying thing then I'd just buy pre-stitched pieces from eBay or charity shops.  But for me, the aim is to start and finish a project within a foreseeable amount of time.  I like to have an end goal.  Even if that end goal is 3 or 4 years down the line.

The Enchanted Alphabet is a good example.  I started that 26 months ago, stitching one letter per year and now I'm planning to keep going for another year adding little bit each month.  By the end of that time it may have had 50-60 days stitching altogether.   I could have completed the piece in 2 months if I was a OAAT stitcher.

Both my Chatelaine and my Discworld Mappe are long term projects.  The Discworld has a target of September 2020 (my son's 18th Birthday) with a stretch target of August 2021 (my son's A level results).  The Chatelaine will take however long it takes!

But those are the exceptions.  All the other active projects on my list have the goal of finishing within a year of starting them.  My aim is to reduce the number of older WIPs each year and minimise starts.

I started the year with 26 WIPs.  Excluding the Just Nan smalls I have made 6 new starts in 2018 and completed 5 projects with another 6 due to be completed by the end of the year.  Leaving me with 21 WIPs.

Finally, the Summer Postcard Blog Hop is well underway.  Five cards have gone out, and will be shown on the recipient's blogs soon:

Ariadne from Greece

Butterfly Wings

Jeremiah's Mom

Mein Allerlei Hobby

The Alychmyst's Study

Hop over and see whether the cards have been shown yet.

Great progress Jo. I so love all of the projects you're working on. Alice is still my favorite.

Leo the lion is lovely, I would say that though is its my birth sign.

Just love all the lovely stitching. And philosophically speaking, I would think most stitchers have to love the process or they would not keep it up. There are so many other lovely ways to decorate a home. My stitching is slowly crowding out most other forms of art we have had in our home.

Leo the Lion is my fav too in this post. Lots of progress on Alice.
That's a very interesting question for the month: but don't you think it should be do you like new starts or finishes, as we all like the process that's why we stitch.
I'm like you I like to have goals for finishing my projects but essentially I am an OAAT stitcher.

I agree the process of starting and stitching a new project is so satisfying :)

Love all your beautiful stitching. I enjoyed reading your answer to the question of the month too.

Great progress on all, Jo! I enjoy the stitching more as the number of larger unframed finishes laying in my drawer can attest :)

Lol, couldn't it have been the frilliest witch in the world, extra black ruffles?!

Hmm. I can see I'm in the minority for this but I find the finish to be the most satisfying. Maybe. It's certainly satisfying to see the progress after a session but the actual act of stitching isn't satisfying for me. Enjoyable, relaxing, and sometimes stabbing-frogs/knots/beads-with-needles frustrating. But The End, the LOOK I MADE A THING is really what I'm after. Gosh, maybe this is a big reason why I don't like a lot of WIPs? Or maybe I'm misinterpreting the question. Or reading waaay too much into it hah~

I love the process, and I love finishing the item and being able to say "yes I made that". I wouldn't enjoy the finish if I hadn't made it. I like the idea of targets for projects, but mine tend to be incredibly vague. Great progress on all your stitching; it's been great watching them all throughout the year! x

Wonderful progress on so many stitches Jo. You are always amazing with how much you accomplish. I too love the stitching so much more than the finishing. But, there is great satisfaction when a finish comes together and I really like it too. RJ@stitchingfriendsforever

Beautiful work! Your Enchanted Alphabet and Happy Halloween Night are giving me fabric envy and a craving for a more Autumn themed project of my own:)

Great progress on everything! Your organization is inspiring. I'm sure it will be fun to add the spooky extras on the alphabet and I can't wait to see what you come up with me. I also have 6 WIPs scheduled to finish by the end of the year.

Great progress this month, Jo! I love your spooky conversion of the alphabet and can't wait to see what spooky little details you are going to add.

I really admire how goal oriented you are with your stitching. I want to get my WIP list down a little as well, because I totally lost sight of the finish for some of them...which is a shame really!

Progressing well Jo on all your stitching. I wish I had the strength to stop with the new starts but I'm beyond help and just accepting my fate LOL!
