Zodiac SAL - Cancer

Welcome to the  Zodiac SAL.  I will be posting on the first Saturday of each month with information about that month's sign and a linky for anyone who wants to join in.  The linky will stay open until the end of the month.

Last month we had three people link up with me, please do visit them now if you missed their posts before:

Cancer, the Crab, is a Water sign ruled by the Moon and covers those born between 22nd June and 22nd July.

In Greek Mythology the story of Cancer the Crab is said to be connected to Heracles.  Some storytellers say that during Heracles' fight with Lernaean Hydra, Hera, sent a crab from a swamp to snap at Heracles' toes because Hera had sworn to kill Heracles.  Heracles was able to kill the crab by smashing its shell with his foot.  As a reward for its efforts serving her, Hera placed the crab in the sky and it became Cancer.

Cancer People: What They’re Like

Cancer people are homebodies at heart, even if they’re out and about in the working world or the queen bees of their social hives.  They love returning to a space that they can call their own.  Home and deep bonds, especially female ones, keep them feeling secure.  Many Cancers are passionate foodies who love to cook and of course, eat!  Many Crabs love to host their own house parties for a regular crew.  Creative Cancers are the ultimate culture vultures, always up on the latest Michelin-starred restaurant, new band or raved-about independent film.  Great with kids and pets, Cancers make excellent parents and caretakers.  Need a little TLC?  Call on Cancer, who’s always ready with a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on.  (Be warned: You will need to return the favour soon enough!)  But don’t get too hooked on Cancer’s compassion or your relationship can get codependent.  That shell can be a bit too snug and Crabs can lose perspective, lapsing into pessimism.  Before claustrophobia strikes, make sure to set healthy boundaries.  Encourage Cancers to dry their tears and face their fears.  They need friends who give them space to vent but also remind them of their strength.

For the stitching part of the SAL I have chosen a series of designs from the Donna Kooler book 365 Tiny Cross Stitch Designs. I am stitching them all on one piece of 32 count Millenium Blue fabric. Here is Cancer:

Here is the whole piece so far:

I am also stitching the Satsuma Street Zodiac and since last month I finished Libra:

stitched on 28 count black evenweave

There are no Cancerians in my immediate family but there are little crabs on this piece which I stitched for my cousin's son:

So, let's hand over to you! This is the place for you to link up if you want to join in, please link to the actual blog post, not your blog homepage and include your name so we can see who has joined in.

Finally, the Summer Postcard Blog Hop will be starting soon.  I have a few photos sent in already and will be sending the first one out later this week.  If you want to take part, just email me a photo of something you have stitched which is suitable as a postcard to a fellow stitcher along with a short message of the kind you write on a postcard.  I will forward the photo to another participant who shows it on their blog.  The photo can be anything Summer themed, beach themed, holiday themed, you get the idea!   It can be a new piece or something from your archives.

I love that Mme Chantilly stitch, lovely to see it again. Your Libra looks great on the black fabric. Can't believe there are only 2 months to go!

Both Felix and my dad are Cancers, and both fit that description pretty good! My granddad is also born in July, but missed the Cancer cutoff by three days. I think Leo fits him better anyways.

Hi Jo,
Oh, I am exactly right with you today, I was born in the sign of Cancer, but towards the end. And the description fits in many ways really to me.
Thank you for the nice post.
Hugs, Martina

My husband is a Cancer, but this certainly doesn't sound like him! Sure wish he liked to cook and was a good patient--but nope! He is great with kids and pets, though :)

Love that sweet piece you made for your cousin's son, Jo!

Cancer is a fairly popular sign in my family - Son, Niece, MIL, Cousin, Cousin's daughter, Nephew and a couple others. I finally gave in and have started ordering the Satsuma Street Zodiac patterns. I plan to finish them in hoops and rotate them.

Your Zodiac piece is just beautiful. I have never stitched on anything that dark. But is looks wonderful. My DIL is a Cancer and that description sounds like her quite a bit.

Very interesting. Fits my friend perfectly how funny. Great work on your WIP and your finish. Love the little crab on your earlier finish.

Love how your Zodiac stitching is growing. Three sweet cancers with DD1 and her 2 kids which means a lot of birthday cakes! xxx

As per Hindu astrology, I am a cancerian. Other than the last sentence, I can't relate myself with anything mentioned for Cancer. Lovely stitching!

Hmm, I think I know a few Cancers although by that description, I wish I knew more! I like this month's stitch a bit more than poor Gemini's hah. The olde samplers of yore are always interesting. Sometimes I wonder what went through their head on some of the bands. Maybe they were just trying to use up floss!

The red orange cancer looks great on the blue fabric.
I love the two Bronte samplers.
There are no cancers in my family even not among my friends. So I can't verify the characteristics described in your article. But very interesting again.

Your zodiac sampler's nearly done (and it looks so very good on that blue fabric)! Hard to believe it's been almost a year...

Wow I can't believe there are only two zodiacs left for your sampler! Where has the year gone? Interesting story about Hera and the crab x

I like your description of this ssign very much. Especially the story of the greek myth I never heard before. But a characteristic I would desperately like to add is, that they are soooo moody. This is really good specified on the zodiac-description on Astrosofa.com/astrology/Zodiac. Apart from that I can totally agree to you!
