First Happy Dance of the Year!

My first start of the year is my first finish too!  Just Nan's Lady Scarlet's Christmas:

Stitched on 28 count platinum linen using the recommended threads except for the blue stockings and the reds in the lettering, the berries and the ladybirds.  I also stitched the mice and the ladybirds over 1.  And I made the Gingerbread Men smile.

I also have the triple series of Lady Scarlet's Journey to stitch so I'm not sure how to finish this one yet.  I have this nice red tuck in my stash which I won in Kath's Giveaway so I popped it in there for the time being:

I looked up how to make these and it's not too difficult, you just need to be able sew a neat line!  I might have a go at making one with some Christmas fabric as this one is just a tiny bit too small.

So having finished one, I have to start one!!  As most of you know I have been assisting Nicola with her Scarlet Letter Year Challenge.  The Challenge officially ends on 20th February 2014 but we will be continuing with the blogs and the stitching because it's such a great group of stitchers.  Anyway, there will be a Grand Prize Draw on the 20th for everyone who has completed a Scarlet Letter Sampler during the year.  So how embarassing would it be if all I have to show is one large outlined band and a bit of blue?

So when I won Elizabeth Burrows in the Advent Giveaways I knew I must try my best to stitch her!  The Scarlet Letter website says this about her "This small early eighteenth century English alphabet sampler is actually more challenging than it appears at first glance."

Here is my progress after two days of stitching:

It's an interesting chart.  It looks lopsided on paper but that's because some of the rows are stitched over two and some over 3, like this row.  Have you ever stitched over 3?  It's like waltzing - 1,2,3 - 1,2,3 stitch, 1,2,3 - 1,2,3 stitch.  I'm using some of the 35 count linen Nicola sent me so the over 3 works out to about 11 or 12 per inch.  I'm also using some Olde Willow Linen Threads I won in giveaway by Riona.  The red and blue are a very good match, the green is darker and there is a yellow instead of the charted pink but it will give the same effect of a much paler colour.  Perfect!  Stitching with linen threads is very different to silks or even cotton but it does make me feel more in touch with Elizabeth, I'm sure she didn't have DMC or Thread Heaven in 1725!

Here's the finished picture from the SL website:

Elizabeth Burrows

The 1725 on the frame refers to the date Elizabeth stitched her sampler, but this is the really exciting bit - in the bottom row it says 179, this is because Elizabeth also includes her year of birth 1709 but rather than use all four digits she uses 179 as that was how the year was pronounced then (Seventeen Nine, rather than Seventeen Oh Nine).  Now anyone who has my email address may recognise those numbers, they are my date of birth which I incorporated into my email addy!!  So it seems most serendipitous that this sampler chose to come to me to stitch her!  We are made for each other!

Finally it's just over a month to Valentine's Day so it must be time to launch the
.
Secret Stitching Sweetheart Blog Hop

It's really very simple, all you have to do is email me a picture of something you have stitched which is suitable for a stitching friend on Valentine's Day.  It could be a heart, or a pair of cute creatures, or the word "love" or anything which warms your heart. Really anything you think a fellow stitcher would like to receive in her email Inbox.   It can be something you've stitched in the past or something you've made especially for this year.  It could also be quilted or sewn this year as I know some of my followers do other crafts too.

Send me the email by 10th February.

When I have all the emails I will randomise them and send one to each participant on 13th February.  Then on 14th February you must post the picture you receive onto your blog under the heading
 Secret Stitching Sweetheart.
There will be a list on my blog of everyone joining in, so check out all the blogs and find out who got your picture and identify yourself  in their comments as their
Secret Stitching Sweetheart.

Does that make sense to everyone?  I hope so!

If you'd like to be involved then leave a comment on this post, I'll be putting little reminders up from time to time and will email on 9th February to make sure you send the pic in time.

Secret Stitching Sweethearts Revealed

Happy Valentine's Day to you all!  I hope that those of you in relationships got well treated today.

Over the last few weeks my email inbox had been receiving Hearts and Love in preparation for the Secret Stitching Sweetheart activity.  I have a lovely spreadsheet and each person has now been emailed a picture from a random participant.

At some point today they will post the picture they receive on their blog and wait for their Secret Stitching Sweetheart to reveal her identity by leaving a comment.

We were lucky enough to have 14 bloggers taking part again this year, a different 14 to last year but still perfect for February the 14th!  They are:

visit Vickie's blog first, read a few entries, then as you go round the other blogs try guess which is Vickie's Valentine!  I bet you can do it.

Then onto the others:

This is a "just-for-fun" Blog Hop, there are no prizes.  But the Easter one is fast approaching and there will be a prize (or prizes) for that one, so keep your eyes peeled for rules and sign-ups.

Stitching-wise I have finished two ornies but I'm saving them for a round-up post.  I've done a little on the Scarlet Letter sampler and I collected Joyous Noel from the framers:

The frame isn't as ornate as I'd have liked due to the lack of choice round here!  The carved frames only came in fixed dimensions and the proportions were wrong, too wide for the design.  As ever she made a great choice of mount (she chooses, I stand there and nod in agreement!) and a terrific job of stretching and framing.  The satin stitches had pulled the linen quite skewiff so it needed a good stretching.

Hubby has asked who this Noel fellow is and why we have his name up but I'm just not waiting another 10 months to display this piece of gorgeousness!  The chart came from Shirlee in the USA and is now going back to the States to Susan who admired it so much when I first showed the finished picture.

Finally, I seem to have finally shaken off the germs!  Thanks for all your good wishes.  I've been going to bed very early after about 30 minutes stitching and no blog-reading.  As a result I have 915 entries in my Reader!!!  Please forgive me if I do not read and comment on every single one.
Your stitching is lovely, your finishing is so neat, your children/grandchildren adorable, your cats/dogs the cutest, sorry you've had ill health/bad luck, congratulations on that lovely thing that happened to you.
Please copy and paste as appropriate to your post LOL.

ps this is my 200th post!!  Congratulations to me!

Theme-a-licious January Update

Theme-a-licious is hosted by Heather of It's Geek to Me
Each month Heather thinks up a theme for us to stitch to, or in my case, a theme to somehow shoe-horn my existing stitching into, no matter how tenuous the link!

This month it is

Jardin Janvier
The holidays were a little stressful...let's relax in a nice garden. Work on any piece with flowers or gardens.

So out of hibernation came Green Goddess!!  Embarrassingly I haven't stitched on her since last Jardin Janvier!  Here is the picture from that last update:

And here is today's photo for comparison:

And here is the second piece that fits into the Jar din theme, the first in the series from Dragon Dreams 12 Dragonlets of Christmas, Partridge in a Pear Tree.  They are only available through their Facebook page.  This is tiny, only 2 by 1 inch stitched over 2.  I'm stitching the 12 designs one a month over this year as part of Silver Lotus's ornie challenge.  The Large Boy has requested they be finished individually so they can be added to our display board one at a time next Christmas.

So that's it for Jardin-ing.  In other news, I received a batch of threads from Kathy as payment for a magazine I sent her.  I now have every single plain DMC colour, even the ones added randomly in the middle of a run (777 bought last week).  So now I can stitch this:

Isn't it amazing?  To find out more click on Hardcore Stitch Corp blog.  I saw this on Mr. X-Stitch's blog and just loved it.

Finally it's less than a month to Valentine's Day so it must be time to launch the

Even if you haven't taken part this year why not take a tour round the blogs and see if you can guess who sent which picture.

Here's a little bonus pic just for you all:

Can you guess who sent this one in?  No prize, just for fun!

Finally, I scheduled this post to appear automatically in the early hours of Valentine's Day, did you spot what I did with the date and time?  Small things make me happy!

Secret Stitching Sweethearts for Valentine's Day

As promised, here is a fun online activity for Valentine's Day.

The Secret Stitching Sweetheart

It's really very simple, all you have to do is email me a picture of something you have stitched which is suitable for Valentine's Day.  It could be a heart, or a pair of cute creatures, or the word "love" or anything which warms your heart.  It can be something you've stitched in the past or something you've made especially for this year.

If you'd like to be involved then leave a comment on this post, I'll be putting little reminders up from time to time and will email on 9th February to make sure you send the pic in time.  We managed 24 people taking part in the Advent Calendar which was such great fun, I'm sure this will be too.

If you don't have anything already stitched then Cyberstitchers have some nice freebies (San Man's are good) or try Google Images for "grilles gratuites coeur".  The French seem to excel at beautiful hearts.

If you'd like to make a link on your blog to this post, please help yourself to my Heather Holland-Daly Heart at the top of this post.

Sending Lots of Love out and hoping to get some back!!
