The People Chose Finishing

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  Each month I ask for suggestions on the blog and then make a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

July - Finishing
August - Monochrome
September - Bees

Finishing - the end goal and the thing we love to hate!  The biggest source of procraftination - starting another project so you don't have to fully finish the previous one.

There are so many different ways to fully finish a design - from framing to pillows, from 3D fancies to flatfolds, from scrapbooking to putting it in a bag for 20 years.  Most of us have a pile of finished pieces we have promised to FFO "one day".  In fact Rachel, the Ten Hour Stitcher started a SAL for that very reason.  You can link up with her on the 10th of every month and find out what she has inspired everyone to FFO recently.

Like most people, my first finishes were simple frames.  In fact, my very first finishes went in "click" frames, no stretching or lacing needed, cut fabric to size, click the clips around the edge!  My first fancier frame was this one in 1994:

The wooden frame came plain with the kit.  I painted it red and mounted the stitching on the back.  The design is stitched all on one piece of fabric with the gaps charted.

Compared with this Joan Elliott design from 2010 where I had to draw around the glass for each mini frame and choose the portion of the design to fit in each aperture:

I do make pillow finishes although my sewing is not my strong point!  This is one of my first attempts from 2012:

That is my own design, for an exchange we did.  Here's a more recent Just Nan one from 2017:

I mentioned 3D stitching which is incredibly fiddly but very rewarding.  Here's my first attempt:

Drac-in-a-Box by Acorn House Designs

An adorable little cottage by the Nutmeg Company:

Just Nan Haunted Autumn Mouse in a House:

My exploding book was another fun finish:

I need to make a video of that one.  It uses two series of Just Nan designs.  More photos in this post here - Warning-this-post-contains-explosives

Of course, I could dedicate an entire post to my Scrapbook finishes.  I discovered a love of collecting the papers and a simple way to display a lot of small finishes.  I have a page on my Happy Dance blog with them all on - Scrapbook pages

Here's a favourite  - Brooke's Books Belinda Witch in Venice.  Old calendars make great scrapbook pages!

All my finishes can be found on my Happy Dance blog - there are over 600 of them now which is why it was so hard to just choose a few for this post!  Link in the tabs at the top of the page.

Now it's over to you. All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Finishing, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog. Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog. I look forward to seeing what you all post.

Finally, I need your suggestions for the next poll.  Any thing, no matter how obscure, weird or random will go into the poll.  Keep the theme suggestions to a single word or two - so you could have Cats, or Blue, or Holidays, or Warmth etc.  Really anything which could be illustrated in cross stitch.

Looking forward to reading them all!

The People Chose Mermaids

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  Each month I ask for suggestions on the blog and then make a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

June - Mermaids
July - Finishing
August - Monochrome

I think when stitchers say "Mermaid" there really is only one designer who comes to mind - Nora Corbett for Mirabilia.  Nora has designed some of the most stunning mermaids in existence.  My first was Bluebeard's Mermaid, stitched back in 2011:

stitched on 32 count Murano in Waterfall from Crafty Kitten

She is pretty much a permanent feature on my wall from January to September.  October to December are for Hallowe'en and Christmas designs.

To date, she is my only full Nora Mermaid although I have stitched a portion of Shimmering Mermaid for a Round Robin in 2013:

Here's the full piece:

Joan Elliott has also designed a few mermaids too.  Let's be honest - is there any subject Joan has not turned her design pen too, very successfully.   Whatever she does is very recognisable as a Joan Elliott.

Here's the July Mermaid from The Year of Magical Stitching:

stitched on 28 count Jazlyn in Peacock from Crafty Kitten

I scrapbooked her very simply.  I need some wave embellishments, I think.

My final Mermaid finish is this cute freebie from The Little Stitcher.  I made this into a Birthday card for a friend:

I don't currently have a mermaid in my WIPs, as you can see it's not a theme I am really obsessed with, unlike Hallowe'en and Witches!  But I do like the designs so I'm looking forward to seeing your's.  If I was to stitch another mermaid it would be one of these two:

Gypsy Mermaid - companion to Bluebeard's Mermaid

or Mermaid Letter J

Now it's over to you. All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Mermaids, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog. Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog. I look forward to seeing what you all post.

The People Chose Flowers

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  Each month I ask for suggestions on the blog and then make a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

May - Flowers
June - Mermaids
July - Finishing

Floral designs must be the number one most popular subject for stitching along with An Alphabet.  Flowers have appeared in samplers since the earliest day, often as stylised borders or motifs.  Now you can stitch everything from reproduction styles to realistic floral pictures via personified flower fairies.

My very first finish back in 1993 featured a stylised basket of flowers in a mini sampler from Anchor:

The next year I moved on to a series of four designs by Sue Cook based on the artwork of Alphonse Mucha.  This one is Flowers:

In 2012 I worked my way through the Flower of the Month series from World of Cross Stitching magazine and stitched all 12 as greeting cards sent out to various friends in the cross stitching world.  Here's a collage of them all:

I tried a different technique for the flowers.  I did the backstitch in one of the colours used and then coloured the highlights of the flowers using felt-tipped pens.  Very quick and effective!

This next design is one of my favourite Floral pictures, a Round Robin from the days when they were really popular and we often had two running at once!  This one is based on Joan Elliott's Flower Fairies.  I stitched the six flowers in the centre and sent out instructions about placement and stitching for each of the main fairies.  This comes out on display every Summer:

I don't really have a current project which is floral based although a number of the Just Nan smalls do feature flowers as well as Summer Typography:

Now it's over to you. All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Flowers, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog. The People Chose Freebies

March - Freebies
April - Speciality Stitches
May - Flowers

Who doesn't love a freebie?  Especially when you are doing Stitch from Stash it's a great way to try a new designer, a new technique or just stitch a small.

Back in the olden days before t'internet freebies were sent to the needlework shops who gave them out to their customers, sometimes with the purchase of a specific item.  Just Nan did this a lot with her small designs.  You bought the charm and got a free chart.  As the internet grew in popularity designers realised they could have free designs on their websites which would bring customers direct to them.  The hope was that while you were there you would be tempted by a chart for sale.

So freebies serve a purpose - they are there to increase traffic and sales.  Which is why I loathe Pinterest so much.  It does neither.  It's rare that the link goes to the original designer.  When I am trying to find genuine freebies via Google, I used to get a page of links to websites and blogs, now I get a page of Pinterest.  Many of which are not even free charts.
So if you are sharing a freebie - please link to the original website or blog.  Don't show the chart.  Don't link to Pinterest.  Support our designers!

According to my records, my first freebie design was this one:

Lavender & Lace Christmas Angels found here

This was given to me by my local needlework shop back in 1998.  I then discovered that all the previous years were available online.  There are 20 altogether and I have stitched 12 of them, some as gifts for other people.

When I started blogging, I started storing freebie designs on my laptop along with the links which I keep on a separate page in this blog - Themed Freebie Links.  I do try to keep it up-to-date as links do vanish sometimes.  If you have any good links to add, please leave a comment.

One of my favourite blogs for freebies is the French designer Gazette 94.  I know very little about her except that she produces some wonderful freebies!  Here is the first one of her designs I stitched back in 2012:

Another favourite free series I collect is the Fairy Day Celebration series from Passione Ricamo.  Sadly, I have only stitched one and gave it away.

I really need to get these all stitched on various different hand-dyed fabrics.

A more recent trend is the freebie SAL which designers have realised is a great way to get people actually stitching the design - peer pressure at it's finest.  These are usually found on Facebook groups.  The designer releases a part of the SAL each week or month and everyone gets excited and joins in, encouraging more people to join the Closed Groups thus increasing the designer's following.

Great idea, everyone benefits.  If you keep up with the SAL.

Otherwise you end up with something like this!  Started in 2014 and stalled because I didn't like the second block.

I did start the third block while querying the wisdom of stitching the skin over 1:

I will finish this one day.  I'm adding one older WIP to my rotation each year so this will have it's hour.  One day.

Now it's over to you. All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Freebies, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog. Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog. I look forward to seeing what you all post.

The People Chose Hearts

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  Each month I ask for suggestions on the blog and then make a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

February - Hearts
March - Freebies
April - Speciality Stitches

The Hermiters are a romantic bunch and chose Hearts for February.  I have stitched a lot of heart designs in the past and even have one as my avatar.  Here's a collage I made for the letter H in the Alphabet Club back in 2017:

You can see my avatar on the top left.  That one is by Heather Holland-Daly from her book Stitch Graffiti.  I stitched it on a piece of upholstery fabric using a piece of aida as waste canvas.  Not entirely successfully as it was hard to pull the fibres out from the densely stitched areas.  But it looks good if you don't look too closely!

Three Just Nan smalls I have completed since then:

Just Nan Christmas Rose Cross Stitch Ornament

And this beautiful little cube I stitched for last year's Valentine's Day Blog Hop:

Tiny Heart by Amint Kipatten
(that's a good link for heart freebies)

I've also been busy painting heart rocks to hide for Valentine's Day and bring some love and a smile to people's faces.

I have a new collage maker as the old one is being retired due to issues with Flash.  It's a lot more versatile and it's going to be fun playing with it.  You can find it here - Photo Collage

Now it's over to you.  All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Hearts, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog.  Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog.  I look forward to seeing what you all post.

I shared one link for freebie hearts up above and here are some more.  They should all be "live" still but if you find one that isn't please let me know and I'll remove it.

The People Chose New Starts (and TUSAL too)

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  Last year I asked for suggestions on the blog and then made a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

The top three choices were:

Hallowe'en - posted in October
Birthstones - posted in November
Dragons - posted in December

Since then we've been voting each month for three months ahead.

Upcoming choices:
January - New Starts
February - Hearts
March - Freebies

The People do have very good timing, I have just completed 12 starts for the 12 Days of Stitchmas!  You have seen up to Day Seven already, so here's the rest of the series:

On Day Eight I stitched The Sweetheart Tree's Holly & Hardanger from 2005 and Rosewood Manor's Festive Quaker Tree:

On Day Nine I stitched Dragon Dreams' You Are My Gift from 2010 and Rosewood Manor's Festive Quaker Tree:

On Day Ten I stitched Sue Hillis Designs' Victorian Christmas Tree from 2003 and Rosewood Manor's Festive Quaker Tree:

The Festive Christmas Tree was a finish, my first for 2019.  I stitched this over one on 32 count Blue Hydrangea opalescent from Crafty Kitten using my own choices of DMC in the 790s - 800s plus B5200.  There are more single white stitches than show in the photo.

On Day Eleven I stitched Dragon Dreams' Never Too Big from 2004:

On Day Twelve I stitched The Sweetheart Tree's Merry Christmas Bellpull from 2004:

And all 12 together:

I'm trying to keep New Starts to a minimum with the aim of not starting any BAPs until I complete my Discworld Mappe and/or my Chatelaine Gardens of London.  I'm putting together my "19 in '19" and have six new starts scheduled.  Three are Hallowe'en themed, one is for the Easter Blog Hop and another two just because I want to.  When I complete my 10-a-Day project I'll start Winter in the Square as the next 10-a-Day.

Now it's over to you.  All you have to do is make a post on the theme of New Starts, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog.  Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog.  I look forward to seeing what you all post.

Mustn't forget the TUSAL part of the post:

The pot on the left is my main ORTs tin and the one of the right is my Evening ORTs tin.  That's usually quite empty but I've been frogging Alice's skirt thanks to a dyelot difference so there's more fluff than usual!

Finally, I need your suggestions for the next poll.  Any thing, no matter how obscure, weird or random will go into the poll.  Keep the theme suggestions to a single word or two - so you could have Cats, or Blue, or Spring, or Holidays, or Warmth etc.  Really anything which could be illustrated in cross stitch.

Looking forward to reading them all!

The People Chose Dragons

Regular followers will be aware that for over 3 years now I have run a themed SAL on the first Saturday of each month.  First we spent 26 months doing The Alphabet Club and then 12 months of the Zodiac.  Now I have decided to listen to the People and post about your choice of theme.  In September I asked for suggestions on the blog and then made a poll in the IHSW Facebook Group from those suggestions.

The top three choices were:

Hallowe'en - posted in October
Birthstones - posted in November
Dragons

Obviously  this is a really difficult one for me, I had to hunt around and try dig out a dragon design I'd stitched.  Back in November 2015 I made a collage for the Alphabet Club D post:

So all I have to do is update that!

You Were Hatched by Teresa Wentzler

Dragon of the Winter Moon by Dragon Dreams

Bande des Dragons which I am calling a finish because I hate that aida and I'm cutting off the letters and making a drum finish using the top border.

I have one dragon WIP - Little Snap Dragon by Kustom Krafts:

the confetti is a killer!

There are a number of dragon themed designs in my stash including the companion to Dragon of the Winter Moon called Dragon of the Summer Sky.

Also, two samplers by Lisa Steele - this is Emerald Treasure:

So, why dragons?  What's so special about dragons?  They are intelligent, they are gorgeous, they are majestic, they can FLY.  Some can speak, others are telepathic.  They rarely deserve to die at the hands of knights!

The first book with dragons as main characters that I remember reading was Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey:

Image result for anne mccaffrey dragonsong

The story of Menolly who is driven out of her home, impresses a clutch of fire-lizards (miniature dragons) and becomes a harper.  Other books in the series focus on the full size dragons who are used to fight thread and protect the planet of Pern.  Wonderful stories and only slightly dated now in their treatment of female characters and the drudges.

I've been drawing dragons ever since I can remember too.  First on paper and now on rocks!

Based on You Were Hatched

Now it's over to you.  All you have to do is make a post on the theme of Dragons, mention The People's Choice SAL (you can copy the picture I used at the top of this post and in my side bar) and my blog.  Please link up using the URL of the actual blog post, not the home page of your blog.  I look forward to seeing what you all post.

Last month everyone voted on the choice for February.  Hearts was by far the most popular choice so that will be the theme for February.  I have updated the sidebar to show this.
